The Importance of Keeping Hydrated During the Summer

It’s very easy to get dehydrated as temperatures start to climb in the summer. Even if you’re in great physical health and aren’t spending that much time in the sun, you could be in danger of dehydration if you’re not drinking enough water. Total Care Injury & Pain Centers offers tips on how to stay hydrated and healthy in the summer heat.

Protect Your Heart Health

When your body is well-hydrated, your heart can pump blood more easily throughout your blood vessels and into your muscles. This means better heart health, and less chance of muscle cramping or muscle fatigue. Your heart also doesn’t have to work as hard when you’re well-hydrated. Your stamina will be better, as will your circulation and blood oxygen levels.

Hydrate Even When Not Exercising

You should stay hydrated even when you’re not exercising. Just sitting or standing in the sun, or spending the day at the beach or in a pool, can be dehydrating. This is exacerbated by drinking caffeine or alcohol. Spending a few hours at a barbecue drinking alcohol, beer, or wine can leave you very dehydrated. It’s important to drink a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you consume, and at least one glass of water for every 45 minutes you are out in the sun.

Stick to Water

While other drinks do provide water and will hydrate you to an extent, water is always best during summer months. Sports drinks are fine if you’re doing high-intensity exercise in the heat, but may be high in sugar. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or sugary drinks, and instead stick to plain water or unsweetened, caffeine-free tea.
